DEA Warns Deadly Fentanyl-Laced Fake Pills Are Flooding the U.S. Effective Treatment for Prescription Drug Addiction Can Be Found at Resurgence Behavioral Health
Costa Mesa, CA - Drug cartels are deluging American communities with new supplies of fentanyl-laced counterfeit pain pills that are deadlier than ever, according to federal law enforcement officials, who have launched the One Pill Can Kill campaign to inform the public of the lethal fakes.
Resurgence Behavioral Health, a nationwide group of substance-abuse treatment centers, applauds this stepped-up fight against counterfeits. Resurgence officials urge anyone struggling with dependence on painkillers to seek help before becoming another fatal statistic.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) warns of an “alarming increase in the availability and lethality of fentanyl-laced fake pills.” In the past two months, the DEA has joined state and local law enforcement partners to seize 1.8 million fentanyl-laced fake pills—enough to kill more than 700,000 Americans. The seizures are part of 9.5 million phony pills confiscated in the past year.
The fentanyl fakes are designed to appear identical to legitimate prescription drugs like Oxycontin®, Percocet®, Vicodin®, Adderall®, Xanax® and other medications. They are widely available through black market sources such as social media, e-commerce and the “dark web,” in addition to traditional distribution networks. Those that mimic opioids like Oxycontin® were responsible for three-quarters of the more than 93,000 fatal drug overdoses in the United States in 2020. According to the DEA, the number of fake pills containing fentanyl has jumped nearly 430% since 2019.
“The pervasiveness of these illicit drugs, and the fatal overdoses that too often result, is a problem that cuts across America from small towns to big cities and everything in between. One pill can kill,” said Deputy U.S. Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco at a press conference with DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “The department will continue to use all of the resources at its disposal to save lives, complementing strong enforcement efforts with public awareness and outreach campaigns, as well.”
Milgrim said the DEA “remains steadfast” in its commitment to fight the scourge of fake pills by “dismantling drug distribution networks across the United States. ” She added, “I urge the American public to talk to their loved ones about the threats and dangers of fake pills and the simple fact that one pill can kill.”
That is the central theme of the One Pill Can Kill campaign, which is fighting the problem by informing the American public of the dangers of fake prescription drugs. It reminds users that the only safe medications are those prescribed by a trusted medical professional and dispensed by a licensed pharmacist. Any drugs that do not meet this standard are unsafe and potentially deadly.
